How We Raise Our Birds
Our hens are a mixed flock who lay a range of colourful eggs. They are truly free-range, considering fences to be more like suggestions, exploring the farm as they please. Visiting children love to point out an 'escaped' hen sauntering by, scratching at the ground or snapping up an unlucky insect. The ducks are similarly transient, always looking for a new water source to splash in. That being said, our flocks have secure coops to call home at nightfall. Both of our chicken and duck eggs are available seasonally for pick-up on the farm or as an addition to your online order.
Our Hens
Our hen flock is composed of a mix of production and heritage breeds, who lay a beautiful variety of rainbow-coloured eggs. They eat a certified organic feed, and forage for insects, worms, seeds and other delights in the fields they frequent. They are free-range (a little too free range some days!) and are only locked up at night for safety from predators.
Our Ducks
We raise two breeds of duck here on the farm, Anconas and Welsh Harlequins. Both were chosen for being excellent dual-purpose breeds who are also wonderful foragers and not inclined to fly away! We make sure our ducks have access to water for swimming and splashing in every day, and they are free to roam, but asked to come home to their coop at night to keep them safe from racoons and mink!
How to Purchase
Our egg supply is somewhat intermittent and very seasonal. We sometimes have extra eggs available as an add-on to other product orders, otherwise we sell locally for on-farm pickup. Send us an email if you'd like more information.
