How We Raise Our Broilers
Broiler chickens are typically raised entirely indoors, with minimal space, and no opportunity for enrichment in their short lives. This inspired Brass Bell Farm's pastured poultry program, where we raise upwards of 500 broilers each year, in the best way we know how - outdoors, on pasture, free ranging, and eating a certified organic diet!
Brooding
Upon receiving our chicks as day-olds, they immediatley move into our 'brooder' - a small, heated enclosure that promotes warmth and safety. Chicks are very fragile, and keeping them close with easily accessible food and water is essential to their health and wellbeing. The chicks eat an organic poultry starter and some clipped greens when they're a bit older.
On Pasture
As soon as their adult feathers have grown in, the chicks head out to pasture. They live in our mobile chicken tractors which provide them with protection from the elements and predators, while allowing them to begin foraging. We move the tractors twice daily so they always have access to clean ground, and fresh forage. After about two weeks, the chicks are large enough that they can safely leave the tractor during the day and be 100% free range.
Feed
Our birds are fed a 100% certified organic feed, and once they are old enough to move onto pasture, they consume insects,
worms and forage, too. Our chickens do a fantastic job of trampling overgrown grass and eating the seedheads of mature plants.
How to Purchase
We raise our broilers from April to October, so that the birds can enjoy their free range lifestyle without the discomfort of wind, rain, and excessive cold weather. A certain number of our birds are destined for local chefs, and the rest are available to purchase via our farm store.
